Kitchen Faucet Buying Guide
The kitchen faucet is one of the most used fixtures in the home. There are more features and design options than ever before. Choosing the right configuration, features, and design will make your time in the kitchen much more enjoyable for years to come. Let us help you in making the right decision for you and your kitchen.
There are many accessories and options when buying a new faucet, but it’s the existing spacing and holes you want to consider for easy mounting. You can customize these if you are installing a new sink.
Deckplate: This type of mount has a mounting plate that holds the spout and handle, with the capability of having additional features like side sprayers or soap/lotion dispensers.
Non-Deckplate: Non-deckplate mounts can hold up to five separate holes that mount independently for the handles, spout, side spray and soap/lotion dispenser.
Wall-Mount Faucets: This style is mounted from the wall above the sink, which makes it easy to wash dishes and clean around the sink area.
Features & Functions
Single-Handle: Only requiring one or two sink holes, this handle can install either to the faucet base or stand alone. Mounting plates often come with this faucet to cover the unused sink holes.
Double-Handle: All three sink holes are required here, as the hot, cold, and faucet head are mounted separately.
Pull-Out: Pull-out sprayers are attached to the faucet and pull out to make washing dishes easier. Available for either single or double handle faucets.
Pull-Down: This sprayer attaches to a High-Arc spout and retracts up into the arc, and often comes with a pause function. Available for either single or double handle faucets.
Side: Side sprayers require a separate hole in your sink or countertop. Like the other two sprayers, this retracts when not being used.
When choosing a spout, select one that reaches the center of your sink. There are a lot of spout styles and heights, however if you have an average sized sink you would choose an 8″ – 10″ spout. If you have a larger sink, choose a spout that is 12″ – 14″.
Standard: The standard spout is generally 3″ – 5″ above the sink plane.
High-Arc: High-Arc spouts are typically 8″ – 10″ above the sink plane.
When picking out a finish, consider the decor of your kitchen and choose something that will enhance your existing hardware. Look for manufacturers that offer warranties and lifetime guarantees that protect against tarnish, abrasion and discoloration.
Chrome: Comes in polished, brushed or matte finish. Very durable and economical. Easy to clean, but does show more water marks than others.
Stainless Steel: Very durable and economical. This comes in a polished, brushed, or matte finish which is easy to clean, but also shows more water marks than some other options.
Nickel: Very durable and easy to clean, and comes in a brushed or satin look.
Mixed Colors: Come in a variety of combinations such as satin nickel, polished brass, brushed nickel, polished chrome and many more.
Brass: Finishes include high gloss, satin or antique, which resist damage and wear.
Bronze: This finish is resistant to scratches, tarnishing, and corrosion. It comes in a polished, brushed, or a darker oil-rubbed finish.
Solid Color: Standard colors are white, black and ivory. The epoxy, or baked-on enamel, make this finish easy to clean.
